A great post over at SEO Book was titled You Aren’t Average and included this video below. Scott from Google was in Times Square in New York and asked over 50 passersby of different ages and backgrounds “What is a browser?” Watch the many responses people came up with:

Sorry for the delay replying, I just noticed this! You're very right, it's easy to forget how many people are unaware alternatives even exist.
Not only to most people not know what a browser is, there are still a large number people using IE because they don't any better or the alternatives
